The best way for Alabama consumers to obtain a free copy of their credit report is to go to www.annualcreditreport.com. By going to AnnualCreditReport.com, consumers are allowed to get a free copy of each of their three major credit reports, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, once every twelve months.
Although consumers are entitled to their three free credit reports once every twelve months, the site can be confusing and the credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) try and sell extra services to consumers while they are one the site. I recommend that consumers not purchase any of these services, and simply get their free copies of all three credit reports.
I do NOT recommend going to www.freecreditreport.com. The service is not “free” and the credit reports provided are not always accurate.
If a consumer has already received their free credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com, then they will likely need to purchase their report directly from Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Typically it will cost from $30 to $50 to purchase all three reports, depending on the “extras” you purchase.
Another source for obtaining all three reports is www.myfico.com.
When obtaining your credit reports, it is vital to get all three reports (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion). There will likely be differences between the three reports, since all creditors do not report to all three agencies. Thus, only by getting all three reports, will a consumer have a complete picture of their credit report status.
Once all three reports have been obtained, the consumer is in a position to examine their reports to determine if there are any errors.
